The Josie and the Pussycats film is the perfect example of why the initial box office earnings and immediate reviews of a film should not be the metric by which all cinematic endeavours are forever measured. That is to say, Josie and the Pussycats was categorised as a critical and financial “bomb” in 2001, but has found itself a new label in more recent years – one of “cult classic.” It was, perhaps, ahead of its time – film criticism back then being even more dominated by the pale, stale, male perspective than it is today. Perhaps the rich and layered satire of Josie and the Pussycats only began to receive the appreciation it deserve...
