Her character arc in this film is about trying to exert her own authority over the situation. She is trying to be assertive, though it is not her natural way. She is, in a fundamental sense, trying to justify her occupation of that space. This is what leads to the inevitable violent conclusion, when his fans turn on her, because she is the third wheel in their relationship with Him. She is abused and cast aside, in favour of Him.
