When he first arrives, it is as a suited, inter-dimensional warrior-hero, fighting huge and destructive beings called Elementals, motivated by the death of his family. He takes Peter under his wing – which is something Peter has been in need of since the death of Tony Stark in Endgame – and they fight alongside each other to save the world from the most powerful Elemental of all, in Prague. Peter is so taken with him that he names him Mysterio, and hands him a pair of augmented-reality spectacles that belonged to Tony Stark, and which control a powerful artificial intelligence system, named EDITH.
