were perhaps set on unsure footing by the unusual characterisation of women in this story.

Screenwriters Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields, and Max Borenstein deserve all the kudos, though (along with Dougherty as director), because they have crafted a mid-franchise movie that deals with themes of communication, consequence and sacrifice, without using women as a stepping stone to the further glorification of men.
