Mark has physically withdrawn from his family, but Emma has emotionally withdrawn – spending so much of her energy trying to communicate with the Titans that she doesn’t really communicate with her daughter in any real way. Her relationship with her is simply geared toward giving her the tools she will need to survive the coming events - events that Emma will play her part in causing. The point is that both parents have distanced themselves in different ways, despite Madison having stayed with her mother, in the ‘traditional’ way.
