It isn’t hyperbolic to say that Avengers: Endgame is one of the most highly anticipated movies in cinema history. Between the epic Disney publicity campaign, and the film’s place within one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, it was all but guaranteed to smash box office records. We’re now a few weeks into its theatrical run though, and the misty-eyed regard for this culmination of 21 films can give way to a more clear-sighted examination of what this film actually is.

It is billed as the end of an era, but fandom has dictated that this focus remain on departing main characters....
