Taken on its own merits, Captain Marvel is great, feminist film. It’s hilarious, action-packed, and deeply moving in equal measure. It sports brilliant performances from a formidable cast, and benefits from a well-written story directed by talented individuals. There’s just one problem with Captain Marvel, and that is Marvel.

In this movie, the hero is a woman we first meet as ‘Vers’ on the Kree planet of Hala where she is a member of the Kree military unit, Starforce. We later learn that her name is really Carol Danvers, and by the end of the movie, we know that she is Captain Marvel – though she is never actually referred to by that name. H...
