Sam Raimi is a filmmaker who has never shied away from the embrace of feminist themes in his work and, in this way, his filmography certainly highlights the way in which it is possible for a talented storyteller to grow and evolve over time. It is remarkable, for example, that the same director who created the infamous ‘sexually assaulted by a tree’ scene in Evil Dead also co-created the hugely successful television show Xena: Warrior Princess - at a time when major studios were refusing to engage with the comic book character of Wonder Woman.
