The Meg is closing in for another strike. Toshi sacrifices himself, and sends the others back to the surface without him – something which triggers arguments with Dr Heller upon their return.

As the group recovers, ‘chemistry’ becomes apparent between Taylor and Suyin Zhang – something that Meiying actively encourages throughout the film. But, this first interaction during the rescue sets the stage for the entire dynamic between these characters. Suyin Zhang consistently and directly challenges Taylor’s well-cultivated hyper-masculinity by matching him, step-for-step, throughout the action in a low-key way. The two of them unconsciously form a unit of heroism, and every time someone has to do something dangerous, they both step forward to act.
