To demonstrate, Lee takes Marcus to a nearby waterfall and shouts behind it – encouraging Marcus to do the same. The sound is hidden by the rushing water.

This would be a very useful lesson for Regan to learn, given that her deafness means she cannot hear movements. Learning the exact circumstances under which she can safely make noise would be helpful to her – but she is left behind. Is she left behind because Lee wants to teach his son about hunting, rather than his daughter? Or, is she left behind because Lee felt Marcus would appreciate the chance to yell behind a waterfall more than Regan,...
