purpose. We hear Tracey confessing the number of times she has cursed, and the context in which those words were uttered - and when Graham meets up with his family, he tells the children that they are never allowed to “hang out with Tracey Abernathy.” Tracey has just regaled Graham with tales of her teenage exploits, which are really standard activities for someone of her age – but they stand in stark contrast with the somewhat austere lives being lived on the Hess farm.

It draws close attention to the pared down day-to-day existence of Morgan and Bo. While Tracey’s life is clearly steeped in drama and high emotion, the Hess family is characterised by the long silences and quiet, clipped phrases that fill their home. Tracey rambles at length, while Graham, Morgan, and Bo express themselves...
