When she wakes up in the bunker, chained to the wall, we immediately make assumptions about her circumstance, and the owner of the bunker, Howard. But, when we hear from Emmett, see evidence of the chemical attack outside, and hear Howard mention his daughter, we begin to question whether it is actually Michelle that is behaving monstrously, in being so suspicious and ungrateful.

Howard’s true nature is gradually revealed, however, and then the film becomes a story about battling the monsters within, and also without.
