Without doubt, 10 Cloverfield Lane is among the best films released in 2016. It is one of those rare endeavours that defies standard categorisation – it is not a horror film, but contains horrific elements; it is not science fiction, but contains science fiction themes; it is not a psychological thriller, but keeps us in suspense as to motive and intention. Most importantly, however, it deftly plays with sexist cinematic tropes, while delivering a female hero for the ages.
