When J.J Abrams rebooted the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens in 2015, millions rejoiced at the prospect of a high profile cinematic franchise entry, featuring a female lead (Daisy Ridley), and a relatively diverse cast (including John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o). This exaltation was as much a reflection of the strength of fandom for Star Wars, as it was a reflection of the frustration many audiences feel at the lack of diversity being delivered by the film industry as a whole. The general consensus seemed to be that The Force Awakens is proof that when industry executives claim that ‘diversity does not sell,’ those industry executives are absolutely wrong.
