But, newly sober, Rachel approaches Martha to apologise for her past behaviour. Martha is confused, so Rachel explains her recollection, and her deep, deep shame. Martha gently explains to Rachel that she is remembering it incorrectly – that she did indeed drink too much, but that Martha simply took her lie down, and that Tom lost his job because he “couldn’t keep his dick in his pants.”
This revelation, coupled with a sober mind, causes Rachel to have an epiphany of sorts. She slowly realises that Tom was the abusive party in the marriage, and that he encouraged her to drink to the point of blacking out so that he could abuse her, and fill her head with false stories that painted her as the villain.
