The Fundamentals Of Caring is essentially white-male-centric-filmmaking 101.Based on the novel by Jonathan Evison, titled The Revised Fundamentals Of Caregiving, the film is written and directed by Rob Burnett – who was previously a renowned writer and producer of The Late Show With David Letterman. Objectively, it is a slightly above-average example of the standard ‘People Go On A Road-Trip And Teach Each Other Very Important Life Lessons’ movie genre, but unsurprisingly, it doesn’t seem to think much of its women.
The movie is predominantly about fatherhood – which is great. There’s nothing wrong with male filmmakers exploring themes of parenthood – in fact, I would argue that the real complexities of fatherhood are not addressed often enough in modern cinema....
