Someone shared a thought with me recently that I haven't been able to stop turning over in my mind:
The way someone treats you is a reflection of their capacity, their upbringing, and their internal state at any given moment. It is rarely about you. And the more you understand that people can only show up from where they are emotionally and mentally, the less personally you will take their behaviour.
I've been sitting with those words for a while now. Not because they're new to me — I've arrived at this understanding slowly, over decades — but because they capture something I spent years learning the hard way.
Let me tell you about my father.
