Indispensability

“You may splash all you please when you enter. You can stir up the water galore. But stop, and you’ll find in a minute that it looks quite the same as before.” Such are the words of America’s laureate of light verse Ogden Nash on the topic of our perceived indispensability.

I’ve heard more than once that we are all replaceable and that if we think otherwise, all we need do is place our hand in a bucket of water and, when we remove it, take note if a hole remains. Look closely for an indication that we were there and, for sure, we won’t find one.
