“Well, how did it go?” I asked. “What did the doctor say?”

“What do doctors ever say?” he replied with a dismissive shrug.

I’d been after my buddy for some time to see his doctor. His diet was terrible. He didn’t exercise and if he walked up a flight of stairs, he invariably had to stop halfway to catch his breath. I was worried about his heart as heart disease ran in his family. His father had died from a heart attack and his brother had been in hospital recently for an angioplasty.
