It was time for my first coffee of the workday. When I arrived with cup in hand, I discovered that our old “pot” had been replaced with a state-of-the-art coffee maker – a veritable latte lounge. The massive black and brushed steel beast sat perched on the counter next to the sink. One of my colleagues was locked in mortal combat with the new coffee maker. When I arrived, he was grinding his thumb into the beast’s LCD screen.

“I see you’ve met,” I said.

“It’s being difficult,” he replied, removing his thumb from the display.

“Have you tried a knee to the grinder?”

“It’s hopeless,” he said,...
