Before I tried to drown Wendy, I actually liked her very much. I welcomed the novelty of these humans in Neverland. Their gazing at us with awe and wonder was flattering. But, as Wendy would say herself years later, I was the eyes and ears of Neverland from the water. Around Peter she was doe-eyed and eager, taking his hand to fly at every chance she could. But I saw her by herself in the woods, and she was conniving. Standing next to a tree, her hand on it like it was a shoulder, she rehearsed her talks with Peter. “Come back with us,”  she said, “Mother would love to have you. Leave this island and grow up with me in my world. You can bring Tinker Bell.”
