Loneliness is like a wide open wound, bleeding and festering.  It grows and grows and gets worse as time goes by, but just as any other chronic pain, it can be ignored. That is, until something returns your focus to it.  The cold side of your partner’s bed, tripping over the lost shoe of a loved one, never to be reclaimed.  Or even someone asking questions that bring that lost one back to the forefront of your thoughts. Loneliness is a plague, for even after it has been cured, there remain scars for years to come, always hidden from view, always waiting for someone to slice it open and begin the bleeding again. Only time can cure loneliness, time and trust. Trust that you can survive by yourself, with only yourself to rely on, and trust that the person who cut you won’t willingly do it again.
