No one would ever understand him. Ever. All people saw was a scrawny kid who got into fights. No one seemed to care that he wasn't the one starting them or that he mostly finish them on his stomach, in the dirt.
Eli shoved his hands into his pocket and trudged down the darkened city block. It was his favorite time of day, everyone was indoors, no one haunted his every step, and his black clothes would melt him into the night's embrace. He felt his most alone at night, but also at peace. Tonight was no different.
As he wandered the city, no real destination in mind, he heard their laughs before he saw them.
"Eli…" they said in unison. "What have we told you about wandering the city alone at night?"
Eli his eyes went wide, he quickly darted around...
