I roll over to face James. “Hey, James,” I whisper into the dark. “James. Are you awake?”

“Kind of,” I hear back. “What do you want?”

“Do you think we can trust Aunt Wora and Uncle Had and Sanford?”

“Sure.”

“I mean it. Do we know they’re on our side?” I sigh. James is too trusting. To him, if you’re nice to him, then you’re a nice person, and if you’re mean to him, then you’re a mean person. I wish I could talk to Madison. She’d know what I meant.
