The campus turned a thousand colors as autumn leaves blazed. Then the nights chilled and the leaves fell, leaving trees bare as Christmas grew near. What I most enjoyed about this holiday were the wreaths on doorways and garlands of pine boughs over the fireplace. The Reverend cut a White Pine tree from the stand lining the back meadow and dragged it into the parlor, and I liked to pull Mrs. Keep’s rocker behind the tree in order to enjoy its bushy blue needles and piney fragrance while I studied.
