the world is but a grain of sand
and life an atom small
so much remains of unknown land
it hardly feels at all

that i exist in conscious thought
a shadow seems more real
even though the knowledge sought
and gained with pious zeal

affords a precious little shell
within an endless sea –
a shadow stirs and breaks the spell
revealing only me
