i've had someone tell me forever
it's not what it's cracked up to be
so don't say you'll love me for always
those words mean nothing to me

as soon as you say something concrete
no matter how awesome it sounds
my disbelief meter goes haywire
and shuts everything hopeful down

it might be life's got me too jaded
or maybe i now see what's real
but if you want part of my life
you'll accept it as part of the deal

just tell me you like being with me
and don't make me think there'll be strings
if you'll give me a little space
i can handle whatever life brings
