Rock stretched out before them, smooth as glass, cleared of debris, and leading up to a wide pit. And into that pit, from the heights above, from the stratosphere, from among the planets and stars in those disturbing heavens, people fell.

Hundreds of people, thousands, falling from the sky. Naked people, businessmen in suits, women in sundresses, children, old people, terror-stricken souls alone or clutching to one another. People. Falling. Plummeting from among the stars and into the strange, almost artificial pit.
