Fear is a subtle master. Grace stepped through the door immediately after his officer. He crossed the black threshold into a world bizarre beyond belief. Black, jagged rock before him, stretching to an unsure horizon. Black sun above. Planets, stars, whole universes filling the lightless sky, as if some painterly God hadn't known when to put the brakes on creation.

But no captain.

Garrett was nowhere to be seen. He couldn't have been a second ahead, but he showed nowhere in the landscape.
