Jayne was startled by a knock at the door not long after she arrived back at Aubrey's Bloomsbury flat. He was on yet another trip, Margaret Cade was still keeping vigil at the hospital, and no one was expected.
Feeling oddly nervous, wary even, she went to open the door. She wasn't sure whether she was relieved or not to see that it was Rory. Had it been anyone else she would have felt pleased to see them, as the flat seemed so cavernous when she was alone there. With Rory she felt awkward.
"Hello," he said. "I expect I should have called first, but I'm useless with numbers. I couldn't even remember the address, but fortunately it's on the end of the row."
Jayne was just about to offer him a drink when the phone rang. It was Lucas.
