PART II: Light Thickens

A very sombre Aubrey met her Jayne at the airport. "Thank god I spoke with Francis earlier today and he mentioned you were coming," he said. "I'm afraid he's been in an accident."

Jayne went pale. "What's happened? You don't mean he's dead?"

"No, but not far from it I regret to say. It was a car accident, a hit and run as he was on his way to the theatre. He's in St Mary's hospital, at Paddington.

"Can we visit him?"

"I'm taking you straight there. You should eat first, but I know you won't. Much good will it do, since he's unconscious. They don't even know if..." he broke off. "Anyway, that's for the doctors."
