On this day in 1894 Aldous Huxley, writer and thinker was born.
Though known for his experimental taking of psychedelic drugs before that became fashionable, Huxley is foremost remembered as the author of Brave New World the terrifyingly prophetic account of life in the future that he wrote over eighty years ago in 1932.
His predictions of genetically modified babies, boundless consumption, casual sex and drugs seem to get more and more akin to present day life. Huxley was also deeply spiritual and spent much of his later years researching mysticism and parapsychology.
He probably knew and appreciated this poem, by Edgar Allen Poe, Alone:
From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
