Evie jumped when Carlotta opened the front door to come back into their half of the duplex. "He's still not back," she said. "And I don't know what he was going on about his fridge for. All he's got in there is beer and cheese."

Evie shrugged and shifted Nic up to her shoulder to burp him. "I almost got the feeling he was going to leave us a note or something. Maybe he didn't get back here before they left."

"Why on earth would Jimmy go with Dad?"

"To get him away from Nic, I suspect. Sometimes your brother knows what he's doing."

Carlotta sighed. "True. But I was hoping he'd be back in time for the christening."

"He said he would be. We've still got a few more days."
