Evie's head was still swimming with the details of the history of the Order she had transcribed when she arrived home. The bulk of it made sense, despite some points she wasn't clear on. But it didn't explain Jimmy's inability to remember what had happened on Wednesday night.

Instead of going up to the half of the duplex where she and Carlotta lived, she went down to Jimmy's door. His car wasn't parked on the street, but she had woken in the middle of the night while he was stumbling around downstairs. She suspected he had gone out, gotten drunk, and taken a cab home, which meant he might well still be nursing a hangover. She knocked lightly at first, then harder when there was no response.
