A Tree Moans

A tree moans outside my window
at night and early morning
when silence spreads,
and I can only wonder
why she cries.
Perhaps tears shed in discomfort,
trapped roots beneath
neighborhood houses,
pushed tight against
concrete foundations.
Or grieving wails in search
of long chopped kin,
their absence still lingers
in the aftermath
of human sprawling.
Perhaps an ancient song
to remind the birds
there is still time
for promised rainbows
to shine.
