I’d been waiting to meet with the detectives for a couple of hours. The police traced Betty back to Uncle Louie’s apartment and were surprised to find me there. They were very polite and allowed me to get a shower and get dressed before escorting me down to the precinct. “Just a few questions.” The cop reminded me of Gordon.
That was about two in the morning.
The police station was cold, dreary with old file cabinets piled high, stacked with mismatched overstuffed folders. It reminded me in a way of Uncle Louie’s office. Finally an overtired detective escorted me back to his desk and offered me a chair. “Coffee?”
I shook my head no.
“So, you’re the nephew?”
“Yeah. What time is it?”
“About four a.m...
