1976 is considered to be the worst crime year to date for New York City.  Some 656,000 crimes are committed, which works out to approximately 1,798 a day or 75 an hour.  This includes 232,000 larceny-thefts, 97,000 auto thefts, 4,800 assaults and 1,600 murders.
