The Mona Lisa is considered to be the most famous painting in the world. Best known for her smile, which was painted in later, however, it is her eyes that can torment you as they follow you around the room.

I stabbed at the crust end of a piece of pumpkin pie on a chipped white dessert plate, the restaurant kind, heavy white glass with a green stripe running around the edge. Bonnie, our waitress felt sorry for us stuck in the middle of the north Jersey industrial wasteland on Thanksgiving. Pie was her way of trying to lighten the mood. I ate three pieces: mine, Loretta's and Louie's.  Angel picked at hers, scraped the whipped cream off and dumped it on my plate.  Smiling and rolling her eyes she mouthed the word diet.
