The place was filled. A family here and there with kids half asleep, while moms and dads stared bleary eyed at one another. At the counter a truck driver loudly complained about all this Thanksgiving shit with everything closed and that in Canada there was none of this bullshit. My guess was that others had stopped by for dinner and company to not be alone on the holiday.
Over and over the waitresses moved about the diner like a murmuration of pink flamingoes, first gathering together at the end of the counter and then in a fell swoop disbursing about the diner lighting at various tables.
