who was standing in the kitchen doorway having heard the telephone ring tossed a tea towel over her shoulder, shook her head in disgust, turned and headed back to the kitchen.  Dad picked up his glass of beer, the empty shot glasses, and followed after her. I stayed frozen to the overstuffed recliner, my eyes glued to the television with my ears tuned to Uncle Louie's conversation. I wasn't going to miss this for the world.

 

On television a parade from out west was coming to an end. “Anticipation is high,” the announcer said, “any minute now children along the parade route will get a glimpse of the man of the hour. That magical little elf.”
