ever be able to get her enough to eat?  Then Selda’s face suddenly collapsed and tears started to run down her cheeks.

“What if they take my baby tomorrow? I won’t be able to bear that.”

“They’re not going to take your baby.” Clara told her all about the encounter with the man who had bribed the officials and how the other men had all supplied food for her.

Nathaniel was here to stay and she would do her very best to help keep him safe. She knew she could count on others as well. 

 

Later that night Clara couldn’t sleep. The day had been just too eventful. The women had come back just as she’d finished telling Selda all the good things that people had done for them. They’d all fussed and cooed over the baby.
