towards the back. Clara’s back was beginning to ache and her feet were sore. She hoped that the numbers would tally this time. Then, just after one of the soldiers had walked past and counted them, Selda gasped and there was the sound of fluid splashing on the ground.

The woman on the other side of Clara nudged her. “Don’t let them know,” she said. “They’ll take her off to the medical centre and you’ll never see her again. When this is over get her back to her dormitory. I’ll cover for you in the workshop.”

The numbers did tally, this time, and they were ordered to line up for the thin watery breakfast gruel.
