Gradually they were herded along the platform and started to leave the station.

“They’re treating us like cattle,” said Selda.

Clara shrugged. “I suppose we’ve got to get to wherever we’re going somehow. I don’t suppose they could put taxis on for us. I expect it won’t be far.”

“I hope not,” said Selda. “I don’t think she’ll be able to walk for much longer.”

Everyone was walking very slowly. That made it worse, Clara thought. It made your feet ache more.

Selda was right. It wasn’t long before Kyla needed carrying. The young woman hoisted her little daughter up on to her hip.

She shouldn’t be carrying her like that, not in her condition, thought Clara...
