“They shouldn’t be long – at least I hope not,” said Käthe as she showed her mother the room where she’d be sleeping. “Hans suddenly got it into his head that he should get her passport sorted out before the holidays.”
“And this is for her trip to Italy?”
“Yes, she has to have her own passport as we’re not going with her.”
“Well, maybe …”
“I just hope it’s not taking so long because there’s any problem.”
“Surely not… with Hans as her father …”
“You’d have thought so, wouldn’t you?” Käthe’s lips were pursed as she helped her mother to hang her clothes in the wardrobe....
