“Seriously,” said Alex as he reached into his pocket with his free hand, “Let’s do this. I brought my stop watch. Do you think you can run the last mile? I want to time you so I can get an idea of how fast you are so we know what baseline we are working from.”

She released his hand, and when she let go, Alex felt the ache in his heart return. Walking hand-in- hand with her in the morning sunlight had felt like a balm for his aching heart. Alex did his best to smile so that Faith wouldn’t know what he was thinking.  

          “You’re kidding,” said Faith. “I thought we were going to start slow. I can’t run a mile on the first day!”
