DEEP IN THE BITTER BARRENS

“The problem is, you’re too afraid, and you’re too bloody proud to admit it.”

         Fenn stopped walking.  His ankle throbbed.  He leaned his head to one side, and he listened closely to the sound of the birds in the trees.  He was alone on a footpath, deep in the Bitter Barrens, and he thought he was hearing things.  “Who said that?” he asked.
