CHAPTER SIX

EVERYTHING CHANGES

Far to the west, on the other side of the Grim Hills, in the desolate Stone Forest, where the peaceful Commondragons slept in their tidy little lairs, the night came and went without incident.  The next morning, blissfully unaware that their tranquil lives were about to be shattered, the old dragon-couple who lived by the dry riverbed – their cave marked by its own little marble mailbox and welcome mat etched with greetings -- awoke and went about their morning routine as if it were just another day.

     Zaal, the husband and father, made a light breakfast of charred eggshells and cinnamon cinders, and served the meal to Pennywick, his beloved mate and the mother of his children, on the stone slab of their kitche...
