Prison Tails
Chapter 43 - The Winter Variation

Triplett swallowed some of her luke warm eggs. They were disgusting enough as it was when they were hot, but luke or cold and touching the syrup was like adding time onto her sentence, regardless of the fact it all ended up in the wash. "Yeah, well it can't be as bad as what happened to Short."

Kumquat looked up from her tray. "Who's Short?"

Triplett swallowed another bite. "Had a cell over in D Block. Been in solitary for like- a year now after she brained Lavine."

Shelly sucked on a spoonful of salty grits. "Bullshit, it hasn't been that long."

"Yeah it has," Triplett informed. "She was a god damn math genius, too," she said pointing her spoon at Kumquat to ensure her attention. "Hence they let her have a Rubik's cube in her cell to keep her sanguine."

Kumquat's jaw hung for a moment before she filled it with food. "A Rubik's cube? I hate those things."

Shelly looked away as she chewed, "I've never solved one either."

Triplett eased forward towards the rest of the group. "The best part is, I heard she took it with her to solitary. No one even noticed the blood on it. Only after they realized the blunt force fracture in Lavine's skull was from a wide, right angle did they swarm into that cell to retrieve it. Didn't even have to toss it either, as I heard it. There she was just sitting in the corner, lightning quick turning the Rubik's with just her fingertips when they went in."

Shelly shook her head in disbelief. "Now just how is that supposed to work?"

Triplett pointed her spoon again as if it were a baton for her chorus of discourse. "I heard she lubricated the thing. All the pros do that for maximum speed."; "I'd have to take off the stickers," Kumquat added.

Shelly rolled her eyes anti-clockwise. "Jesus, Not how she... spins the Christ out of the cube- How are they going to put her in solitary for striking Lavine, and then just let her take the murder weapon with her?"

"Probably 'cause it's a rubix," Triplett said. "Who's gonna think a Rubik's would be used cave in someone's skull?"

Shelly threw up her napkin like a flag of surrender. "I call bullshit. Math genius or otherwise, you

aren't gonna kill someone with a Rubik's cube."

Triplett set down her spoon, crossed her arms and pursed her lips like any black woman worth her salt knows how to do. "I can prove its real by asking a single question."

"That a fact," Shelly asked to Triplett's unwavering resolve, "And what question might that be?"

The rest of the group quieted in collaborative interest. "Simple," Triplett said, "In what world is someone creative enough to make up a story as crazy as someone getting a confirmed kill with a Rubik's?'"

No one at the table spoke for several moments as they mulled the thought around in their minds.

"Exactly." Triplett said, "No one could create a fiction that perfect. Hence, it must be true."

Richards cleared her throat and spooned up some of her own cold eggs. "She's got a point. I wouldn't have thought of it."

Kumquat motioned to Triplett. "Where do you even hear a term like 'Confirmed Kill?'"

Shelly rolled her eyes as poured salt on her next helping of grits. "She's reading a book about the Korean War."

"Are you the one that checked that out," Richards asked.

"Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Shelly said, pulling away the spoon of salty grits she was just about to wrap her mouth around.

"You almost done with it," Richards asked Triplett.

Shelly pointed her grits at Richards. "Shut up. You don't want to read that book anymore than- She's the only one in here that's checked that book out and will have checked that book out once she's done with it." Richards smiled and began laughing. "They'll probably ask her to take it with her when she goes," Shelly added.

Richards wiped her mouth. "She told me that book had you riled up. And I didn't believe her."
"Two cigs," Triplett said, looking to Richards and pointing to the table.

Shelly stared into the void and swallowed her spoonful of grits, in disbelief. "I still say that story is complete Bullshit," she said, coming back to reality, "Uncreatable-Creative fiction or not. And I ever find out you two are conniving to bet on me again you'll be the ones getting brained."
Triplett gestured towards Kumquat. "You want to learn another term I read in that book?"

"What's that," Kumquat asked.
"'Weapon of Opportunity.'"
"And what is that supposed to mean?" Kumquat asked.

Triplett turned to Shelly and mean mugged her with a furred brow. "It means she brained her with the god damn, Rubik's!"
