Chapter 17:  "The Forgotten Vig."

"Stiff upper lip and all that," Sherry said, looking to Richards and pointing at Jacobson with her thumb.
"You don't have to do this," Jacobson pleaded.
Sherry stopped Richards and turned back, opening her notebook to the appropriate page so as to have the numbers in front of her as she endured whatever ridiculous rationalization about to be uttered. Holding the notebook with hands crossed over her waist and a pallid look on her face, Sherry looked to Jacobson, appreciating she was waiting to speak until spoken to. "Alright, speak."

Jacobson swallowed. "I can make it worth your while."
Appreciation flew right through the barred window. Sherry closed her notebook and turned to Richards. "I don't know why I thought I was going to hear something different. Richards' eyes fell to Sherry's, "The usual?"
"You know what, make it so everyone thinks she's just having a heavy month."
"Are you serious?"
"Does it look like I-" Sherry closed her eyes to calm her rising gumption. "You're here so 'My' slippers don't get bloody."

Shelly sat on her rack and made several tallies in her notebook before throwing it to the desk in mental fatigue. "What are you reading?"
Triplett poked her fuzzy haired head from above. "It's a book about the Korean War. I just finished with Inchon, before things started going to shit."
Shelly laughed. "Why in Christ are you reading- No, you know what, let me rephrase: 'Where' in Christ did a book on the Korean War come from?"
Triplett laid her head back on her pillow and went back to reading, kicking her foot to an inaudible beat with the leg that rested atop the bent knee of the other. "Prison library."
Shelly shook her head and laid down, "Ask a stupid question, get an obvious answer."
"Jacobson pay the Juice?"
Shelly stared through the picture of her children pasted to the bottom of Triplett's bunk. "What do you think?"
"I think the Chinese royally screwed us after Pusan," Triplett said without missing a beat.
"You mean the Koreans."
"No we took the Koreans to task. It's 'cause of the Red Army and their perpetual numbers we didn't win."
Shelly rolled her eyes. "Alan Alda must've neglected to mention that in favor of saber rattling atop his organic apple box."
