Letter from Mary Jefferson to “M”, July 19

Dear M,

Finally, I have found someone else who is interested in the place of tranquility! J, who is one of the girls in my cabin, saw the meadow on the way back from our campout. It transfixed her in the same way that it transfixed me. So we have agreed to return there tonight, after dinner, when we have some free time that might be spent hiking.

Do not worry about darkness causing us problems. The sun does not set until well after 8 o’clock these days, and we shall be there and back again before anyone has even thought to miss us. J also suggested that we ensure that we are with light, just in case we linger for too long.
